Austin mentions the difference in live-action vs. animated superhero films where taking the effort to use CGI to emphasize the fact that, say, the X-Men mutants use their powers in mundane ways would cost millions of dollars. But in reality, animated films themselves already cost a hell of a lot, which surprised me. You see things like Battleship costing $300 million + to make, but you don't realize that the later Pixar films cost upwards of $200 million just for the production budget (granted, Incredibles was "only" $92 million). I think X2, from what I remember, showed superheroes using their powers in ways that you'd expect them to for a live-action film. Ultimately it's up to the creativity of the writers/directors/etc. But an animated film does make things easier since you don't have any practical footage you need to composite with.

Agree that this just gets better with every viewing – and really, how many movies can you say that about. It really elevates it far above the genre. It's not only one of the best superhero movies - but one of the best movies of any genre for that reason. The character development is very really and organic - never forced. Makes me very interested as to what Brad Bird will do with flesh and blood actors in the next Mission Impossible.
